The Computer: Keep the monitor and the computer switched off when you are not using them. Maybe you could even practice this at work.
Light Bulbs: Switching to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs is another way to save power. They may be more expensive than regular incandescent bulbs, but they do help save electricity and prove cost-effective over time. Compact fluorescent bulbs can save around $60 a year. Turn lights out when you leave the room.

Air Conditioner: Set the temperature higher in the summer and lower in the winter. Even a couple of degrees can help save power. Replace A/C filters as often as needed.
Washing Machines: Reduce the number of washes by washing a full load of clothes every time. Use cold water instead of warm or hot.

Television: Unplug your TV and other electronics when you are not using them.
Water: Keep the hot water heater temperature at the minimum heat you can be comfortable with. Invest in an insulating blanket for your water heater, especially if it is in an unheated section of the house.  Switch out your showerheads to low-flow types.
Refrigerator: Keep the temperature at about 37 degrees and make sure the doors are sealing tightly. If leftovers are still hot, let them cool to room temperature before putting them away. You can also save electricity by taking cold or frozen food out of the refrigerator before the meal preparation, thereby saving power in heating it.

Dishwasher: Wait for a full load. Use the air dry/no heat option.
Remember, any gadget that has a glowing light or digital display is consuming electricity even though you may not be using it.
If you can, make sure your appliances are the energy-efficient kind.
Check your house for proper insulation.
Request a home energy audit from your local utility company. This can help you find out how and where your home may be energy-inefficient.
Eliminate your power bill by making your own electricity and learn “how to solar cell” solutions.
