If you are hell bent on building solar panel for your home, can you then go “off grid” and say goodbye to the electric company forever? Being energy independent is a tempting thought. No more costly power bills. No further dealings with the utility company for any reason. Can you make this happen for your family? Should you? The answer depends on where you live, and how much money you’re willing to spend on maintaining your own energy system.

First, think about where you live. Do you live in a part of the world that is sunny much of the time, or do you have a lot of gray and cloudy days?
Even after you install solar panels on your home, they only produce electricity when the sun is shining on them. As a result, you will need batteries for storing electricity for use at night and on overcast days.
That’s where added expenses come in. You’ll have to purchase and maintain the number of large DC (direct current) batteries needed to store one to three days worth of electricity for overcast days. You’ll need ample storage space for all of those batteries, and you’ll have to plan for the cost of getting new ones periodically.
In addition, having a backup generator is a good idea for extended periods of overcast conditions that deplete the power stored in your batteries. The generator will need fuel, so you’ll have storage for that also. Usually generators are powered by gas or diesel fuel. But that seems to defeat the purpose of building solar panel system, so you’ll probably want to use bio diesel. So while it is certainly possible to go “off grid,” the project is not simple or cheap.
A more feasible solution may be “net metering.” Determine whether this is provided by your local electric utility company. Net metering is a practical way to cut down on your electricity costs, yet still have power available at night and during long spells of gray, cloudy days. Net metering allows you to receive credits back from the power company for excess electricity that your solar panels generate during the day. Then, at night or on days when there is not enough sunlight, you simply use electricity supplied by your local utility company. And you wouldn’t have to find a place to store banks of batteries. Although you won’t be living “off grid”, you’ll save a significant amount of money on your monthly bill. Some months you may even have a zero balance.
So if you live in a very sunny region, with lots of extra room to store batteries, living “off grid” and building solar panel might be possible for you. But if you live in a small place, have no basement, and you’re already parking your car on the street because the garage is too full, “net metering” will probably be more practical.
