This video is an excellent illustration of a self build wind generator that was put to the test using a volt meter. It generated electrical energy peaking at over 30 volts.
Our enthusiast built a fairly decent looking robust structure for around $150. Something easily duplicated with your self build wind generator project.

The tower itself is made from two sections of tubing. The lower section 11/2” for stability and balance with the top section at 1″ which slotted smoothly in to the lower section. This makes it more convenient for maintenance or repairs to be carried out without the need to drag the whole thing around making the blades and motor awkward to work on.
Notice that he was able to purchase the generator on ebay. You can bet that he bought it for much less than what he would have anywhere else. Ebay can be agreat resource for all of the items you will need for your self build wind generator. Obviously it’s more convenient to purchase larger and less expensive items locally such as the tubing and the base structure.
This self build wind generator is designed taking into account many factors. Some quite obvious others not.
One of the less obvious factors, especially for the novice, is wind speed. This needs to be accurately measured before embarking on your self build wind generator as there are differerent types to consider. You will need something called a anemometer for this. Wind direction is equally important especially for siting the location of your wind generator. The blades are easily able to position themselves into the wind then obviously you will need to locate the structure directly in the path of the wind direction in order to fully maximise converting the wind velocity to electricity.
Things to look out for, one of which is obvious in the video clip, is wind change. Notice that the wind gusts produced as much as 34 volts, but dropped back to under 20 volts in between the gusts. If you are contemplating using a battery back up system then you can benefit from these high wind gusts by storing lots of excess power for the less windy periods. Change of wind direction is also something to consider as you will need to be aware of those most frequent when working out the positioning of the structure.
The most obvious thing to look for with a self build wind generator is obstructions that are likely to hinder its performance. This can also be worked out taking into account the wind height, as it maybe necessary to elevate the blades to where the wind is more active. Look out for turbulances too, as a stronger tubing structure maybe required in severe cases.
The design you decide for your self build wind generator should be based on these factors.
Here are the points again listed below.
• Number of blades
• Shape of the blades
• Height of the tower
• Kind of generators
• Distance of the installation spot from the ground
• Distance between the tower and the generator
If you incorporate these priciples in your project you give yourself a better chance of success. Watch again the video noting these points. It’s an excellent video example showing a functioning diy project producing electricity.
